About us

Pragmatic AI Strategies was founded in Waterford with a specific goal: help small and mid-sized businesses use artificial intelligence without needing a research lab or a six-figure budget. We are a team of data scientists, software engineers, and domain consultants who have spent years building production ML systems for logistics, retail, healthcare, and financial services.

Our office sits in the heart of Waterford city. We work with clients face-to-face when geography allows, and remotely when it does not. Most of our engagements start with a two-week diagnostic where we audit your existing data, identify the highest-value automation opportunities, and deliver a concrete project plan with timelines and costs.

We do not sell technology for its own sake. If a spreadsheet formula solves your problem, we will tell you that. If a fine-tuned language model saves your customer support team fifteen hours a week, we will build it, test it, and hand you the documentation.

Machine learning model development

We design supervised and unsupervised models tailored to your data: demand forecasting, churn prediction, anomaly detection, recommendation engines. Each model ships with performance benchmarks, retraining scripts, and monitoring dashboards so you know exactly when accuracy drifts.

Quality inspection on a production line, vehicle counting at a junction, shelf inventory in retail: we train and deploy object detection and image classification models that run on edge devices or cloud infrastructure. We handle labelling, training, and integration with your existing SCADA or ERP systems.

Model monitoring and MLOps

A model that worked six months ago may not work today. We set up continuous monitoring for data drift, concept drift, and performance degradation. When metrics drop below your threshold, automated alerts fire and retraining kicks off. We use MLflow, Weights & Biases, or your preferred tooling.

How we work

  1. Discovery call (free, 30 minutes). We listen to your problem, ask about your data sources, and decide whether AI is the right tool. Sometimes it is not, and we will say so.
  2. Data audit (1–2 weeks). Our engineers access a sample of your data under NDA, profile it for quality and volume, and identify gaps that need filling before modelling can begin.
  3. Proof of concept (2–4 weeks). We build a minimal model on a subset of your data and present accuracy metrics, latency numbers, and a cost estimate for full production deployment.
  4. Production build (4–12 weeks). The approved model gets hardened, containerised, tested against edge cases, and deployed to your infrastructure or a managed cloud environment.
  5. Handover and support. We train your team, deliver full documentation, and offer ongoing maintenance contracts billed monthly. You own the code and the model weights.

Why work with us

We have delivered over forty AI projects since 2019, ranging from a three-day chatbot prototype for a Waterford hotel chain to a twelve-month predictive maintenance platform for a food processing plant in Cork. Our median project length is eight weeks.

Every engagement includes a fixed-price option. If the scope is clear, we quote a number and stick to it. If the scope is exploratory, we bill weekly with a hard cap you set in advance. No surprise invoices.

We also care about explainability. Regulators, auditors, and your own staff need to understand why a model made a particular decision. We build SHAP-based explanation layers into every classification and regression model we ship, and we document feature importance in plain language your compliance team can review.

Open-source by default. Unless there is a strong reason to use a proprietary platform, we build on PyTorch, scikit-learn, Hugging Face Transformers, and PostgreSQL. You avoid vendor lock-in, and your internal developers can maintain the system after our contract ends.

Frequently asked questions

▶ How much data do I need to start an AI project?
It depends on the task. A text classification model can work well with a few hundred labelled examples. A demand forecasting model typically needs at least two years of weekly sales history. During the data audit we tell you exactly what volume and quality thresholds apply to your specific use case, and if your dataset is too small, we suggest data augmentation techniques or alternative approaches like transfer learning.
▶ Do you work with companies outside Ireland?
Yes. About a third of our clients are in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. We run all remote engagements through structured weekly sprints with video check-ins every Monday and Thursday. Time-zone differences within Europe have never been a problem.
▶ What happens if the model does not perform well enough?
The proof-of-concept phase exists precisely for this reason. We agree on a minimum accuracy or business metric before the PoC starts. If the model fails to meet that bar, you pay only for the PoC work and we part on good terms. We have cancelled two projects in the past three years because the data simply could not support the desired outcome, and both clients appreciated the honesty.
▶ Can you integrate AI into our existing software?
Absolutely. We expose models as REST APIs or gRPC endpoints that plug into your current application stack. If you use Salesforce, SAP, or a custom ERP, we build the integration layer and test it end-to-end before handover. We have experience with .NET, Java, Node.js, and Python backends.
▶ Is my data safe with you?
We sign NDAs before accessing any client data. All data transfers happen over encrypted channels (TLS 1.3 minimum). We process data on EU-based infrastructure unless you explicitly request otherwise, and we delete all copies within 30 days of project completion. We are happy to work within your own cloud tenancy if you prefer that your data never leaves your account.
